What Is Arnica Used For On Your Skin? All You Need to Know
April 13, 2023
One ingredient that doesn’t get as much publicity as it deserves is arnica. For any skin nerds unacquainted with the herb, arnica, also known as arnica montana, is an age-old remedy rooted in homeopathic medicine.
Traditionally, it was used to treat skin bruising and minor ailments, but its modern-day uses have since expanded, with many swearing by its healing abilities, including our founder, Dr. Shereene Idriss.
Last year, Lady Gaga spoke to Allure Magazine about her use of arnica to ease her fibromyalgia symptoms: "I used to take prescription medication to take down inflammation, and I actually found that it didn't really work and that arnica was much more powerful."
Dr. Idriss is also an avid believer in the miracle herb and its remedial qualities, which laid the groundwork for PillowtalkDerm’s newest creation, The Depuffer. Let’s delve into all things arnica…
What is Arnica?
Arnica is a perennial flower of the daisy family, and the earliest record of its use spans way back to the 1500s when its petals and roots were used topically to treat an array of conditions. Today, it’s typically found in gel form with physicians and dermatologists recommending it to patients as a highly-effective treatment for swelling and inflammation. “As a board-certified dermatologist, I’ve given my patients the same advice post-procedure and seen this ingredient really work," says Dr. Idriss.
So what are the benefits of arnica?
Arnica is used to help soothe inflammation, bruising, swelling, stiffness, and muscle pain. However, skepticism around the ingredient persists, and this mainly stems from FDA mandates. Arnica is traditionally formulated in homeopathic regiments. In the US, all homeopathic products remain unapproved by the FDA — meaning anything labeled as homeopathic is being marketed without FDA evaluation for safety and effectiveness.
To ensure our Depuffer is clear of any risks and side effects, the arnica-based serum in it contains 7% Arnica Montana Flower Extract Complex. We've also conducted independent clinical studies and internal consumer tests that prove its lasting efficacy, so you can (safely!) roll away your skin troubles with the assurance of clinical data to back it.
